Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson garnet with a ruby purple glow
While there is power and depth here there is also clarity. Dense Doris plum and dark cherry deliver a freshness and lift over brown spice rack complexity. There is a deep core of primary fruit and a hint of warm baking spice and cinnamon buns leading into spiced raspberry with hints of red rose petal.
A generous yet juicy entry with plum and dark cherry over raspberry coulis. Super fresh with hints of cherry ripe and long, so long, intense but open and supple. The tannins are very slippery and seductive but finish with resonant energy, lively but silky at the same time. The whole bunch and oak, almost invisible but structurally sub textural. Velvet and cherry through to the finish. With a seemingly endless line of flavour, 5 to 8 years in the cellar without too much trouble.
Vineyard Notes
Mid-Winter 2023 in Central Otago was quite dry with September and October finally yielding some precipitation in the lead up an average budburst timing. The growing season got off to a good start with mild conditions leading into a warming and dry November followed by a very warm December. January and February continued the mild to warm pattern before a gentle abatement of summer and a few solid rain events through March and April. For the season overall, the Growing Degree days were marginally above the long-term average, so it looked like an average season but the warmth of early summer, particularly December set the vines up for what looks more like warmer season results. The wines are plush and generous with silky tannins and great depth of fruit. While they are crowd pleasers in their youth, they definitely have the composure to go the distance.
Winemaker Notes
As our search continues for new terrior amongst nooks and crannies of the Central Otago landscape we only further build our knowledge base of the highlights and challenges this place gives us.
The 2024 harvest see grapes from our 3 Pinot Noir source vineyards come together for the first time. A vinous puzzle that has taken some time to form. The horsepower and structure of the lower Cromwell Basin, depth of fruit and plushness of Queensberry, with the complexity and detail of Wanaka coming together in something of a Tour de Force of Central Otago.
we now have a very exciting base source of Pinot Noir clones spread over different soils and micro-climates throughout Central Otago.
Our 2024 iteration of the Central Otago Pinot Noir comes from the Georgetown, Willowbell and Hawkesbury vineyards with an extensive mix of clones adding to the depth of fruit and complexity in this wine, Abel, 777, 115, 114, 667 and 828 all represented. As has become the modus operandi with this wine that we seek fruit expression over oak and winemaking overlay, 25% whole bunch inclusion with minimal new oak influence.
We are excited about the direction of this wine as a result of the building blocks we now have, and the future looks exciting.
Food Pairing Notes
At this stage the generosity of this wine sees it as infinity enjoyable on its own but if you have a Hibachi grill, procure a well marbled Ribeye on the bone 3 minutes per side and rest while you enjoy the first glass of this wine, the rest is pretty self-explanatory.
