2023 Charteris Pokolbin Selection Shiraz
The nose is full of briar, earth, and dark cherry with Doris plum. Airy Anise like spice and a hint of liquorice give perfume, subtle toasty vanilla oak adding aromatic dimension.
Dark and brooding on entry with wild forest berries and spicy marinated cherries. A deep-set core of plummy fruit rolls up against integrated oak with earthy spice adding length. While the nose is ethereal the palate shows power and concentration of fruit over fine yet textural tannins, almost silky in one direction but grainy in another with a delicate spine of acid maintaining freshness.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Dark crimson with a distinct purple glow. This wine is our top cuvee, single vineyard and then barrel selected. Displaying delicous dark cherries, Black Doris plums and Boysenberry, almost Cassis, gives way to Mr Lincoln Rose, Rosewood and red liquorice. The aroma depth is almost bottomless with fruit and floral fragrance compounded and projected by aromatic spices in a way that is distinctly Hunter. The perfumed power is matched by a subtle resistant which only draws you further into the glass seeking the next layer of fruit complexity. Hours of smelling pleasure here.
Warm and plush with dark plum and mulberry flooding the entry. Violet and Rose petal florals are backed by brown spices with a coating of glossy yet textured tannins, the oak fully disguised in the fruit and earthy complexity that comes with this terroir. The tannins have a resonant feel at this stage, supported with silky yet tactile acidity, giving freshness with svelteness. It only remains to be seen where time will take this wine, it will be a long journey of elegance and complexity, regardless.
Vineyard Notes
2019 Growing Season
In the grips of a persistent drought the old vineyards in the Hunter Valley were pushed to their limit with a serious soil moisture deficit from the previous years. The 2018 Winter was dry and cool with a couple of belting old school frosts sending the mercury below -5 Degrees C. While spring and early summer were dry, there was precious rain events at key moments through the growing season which ensured good canopies for ripening. The harvest was moderately early with Shiraz picking in the second and third week in February.

Winemaker Notes
In a world of fast, loud dialogue and information it is refreshing to know there can still be moments of calmness and tranquillity. Where the elements and natural forces of the universe find a point of coalescence, an equilibrium. For Hunter Valley Shiraz, that moment in time is the 2023 harvest, a wet and cool 2022 winter followed by a long and gentle summer resulting in near perfect ripening conditions, it rarely happens like that for us. Harvest of Shiraz started in March with moderate grape sugar levels accompanied well balanced acidity, exceptional flavour accumulation and fine and reconciled tannins. Under these conditions it is up to the winemaker to recognise the opportunity to become more nurturer than crafter, to let the vines have their voice. Gentle winemaking hand with judicious oak elevage has ensured our 2023 wines are fruit first with a very classic Hunter expression. Elegance and subtlety will see these wines develop very well into the future.
