2022 LE FAUVE By Charteris Pinot Gris

Tasting Notes

Classic cool climate Pinot Gris with subtle Apple crumble straight from the oven with a dusting of cinnamon and plenty of ripe Beurre Bosc pears. There is also abundant florals with honeysuckle, the faintest hint on musk stick and rose petal florals adding depth. Ripe pear drives the flavour profile  with supple acidity and a gentle line of textural plushness giving persistence. Long and flavoursome yet refined.   Drink over the next 2 years with conviviality.

Vineyard Notes
Vintage and Growing Conditions While the “Droughts and Flooding Rains” of Dorothea Mackellar’s famous poem are never too far from the vignerons mind, it is how those two contrasts play out that can make or break to grape growing season. Off the back of the 2016 to 2020 drought conditions there was a lot of precipitation required to refill the soil profile and were it not for cooler than average summer temperatures we may not have arrived at the near perfect ripening conditions we received. Excellent acid retention and slow flavour accumulation from mild temperatures resulted in fresh and vibrant wines.
Winemaker Notes
Phillip and Michelle Stivens continue to nurture the Heifer Station vineyard and we continue to benefit from the balance and harmony this high altitude vineyard delivers. The 21/22 growing season was not the easiest with spring frosts and hail hampering budburst and flowering but the strength of this vineyard is the soil and the vitality it gives. Yields were down but flavour and intensity are up giving wines with abundance and generosity. When you have dirt like this you can keep the winemaking simple giving an opportunity for the vines to speak clearly.
Food Pairing Notes
Perfectly matched with Penne all’arrabiatta or Spaghetti Aglio e Olio or simply on its own.
